Reinbert de Leeuw first conducted works by Ustvolskaya and Gubaidulina during the Holland Festival in 1989. He was so impressed by the radical nature of the former and the subtlety of the latter that he became a fervent advocate for both of them.
A hundred years after the Russian Revolution, younger generations also continue to pioneer new paths. In 2003, Dmitri Kourliandski won the Gaudeamus Award for Innermost Man, an eddying swirl of sound against which a humming soprano attempts to hold her own. In 2015, the prize was awarded to Ghost of Dystopia by Alexander Khubeev, in which a conductor uses his body to control electronically amplified boxes attached to him by wires. Today, we shall hear his latest composition.
