The British Hilliard Ensemble has an outstanding reputation to maintain in the early music scene. During this concert this celebrated vocal company relives the glory days of the Notre Dame organum. The four singers also perform a leading role in John Casken’s The Dream of the Rood.
Casken briefly studied with the avant-garde icon Witold Lutosławski, but he also has a deep fascination with the Middle Ages. Spine-chilling visions of the crucifixion from an early Christian, Anglo-Saxon poem provided the source of inspiration for The Dream of the Rood.
Giya Kancheli’s works likewise have a spiritual undertone. In his Magnum ignotum the Georgian composer probes the Great Unknown with wind ensemble and tape.
